Channel "B" News- October 2-9

Channel B News is taking a week off! We will catch you for our next episode October 17!

SFE Future Chefs

Our little chefs took to the kitchen last Friday to make pizzas! They learned about different ingredients, food safety tips, and got to add their favorite toppings to a personal pizza to eat. What a fun time!

Drawing and Memory

Did you know that the simple act of drawing can help improve a person’s memory?
It’s true!
It helps engage a person’s brain in many different ways, namely visually, kinesthetically and semantically. Researchers have found that when people draw information they have received, their recall nearly doubles!

Mrs. Smith’s 6th grade science students have implemented this strategy continuously throughout their Unit 1 study of Cell Structure and Function, and have seen many positive results on CFA’s!

Junior Auxiliary Kindness Tree

The Junior Auxiliary of Arkadelphia delivered Kindness Tree Program 2025 (formerly Angel Tree) applications to Goza this afternoon. If your family participates in TEA, Food Stamps, or the ARKids A progam, email me that you need an application: cheryl.hilser@arkadelphiaschools.org. I will put it in a plain white envelope and ask your student to come by my office to pick the envelope to take home to you. I hope that will keep it confidential from your students since they won't know what kind of paper they are delivering to you. It is suggested to get your completed applications in as soon as possible. Absolute deadline to turn in packets is Friday, Nov. 7. There is a possibility not all applications will be fulfilled according to the Junior Auxiiary of Arkadelphia form. If selected for the program, you will recieve a postcard notifying you to pick up packages at the First Presbyterian Church on Caddo Street. It is extremely important to list your current address and that it is clearly written so you can be contacted if accepted for the program. You only need one application for the household so if you have students on other Arkadelphia Public School District campuses who reside with you, you can include those students on the Goza student application. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. DO NOT RETURN APPLICATION PACKETS TO GOZA. Packets must be turned in to Clark County DHS Office, 602 S. 10th St., Arkadelphia. If you have questions, please reach out to the Junior Auxiliary Kindness Tree program: arkadelphiaja@gmail.com

Counselor's Corner

Lunch Bunch Goza students from each grade have the opportunity to have lunch with the counselor and a small group of students from their grade level daily. It gives me a chance to build rapport with students and talk about what is going on in their lives whether it is school, family, or something else. We also focus on responsibilties, using table manners, and respecting the time and space of the other students eating with us.

Students are encouraged to stop by my office and pick up a "Lunch Bunch" ticket which I fill out and send with them to the cafeteria. They show it to the teacher on duty so the teacher will know where the student is going. The student is then allowed to go to the front of the line to get a to-go tray and then return to my office (or bring the lunch from home). Topics for discussion this year have ranged from how to avoid drama to getting more organized to be prepared for class. We also start lunch with Good Things to share something good going on in life. I have room for five students at my conference table so I limit the number of students per grade to five per day. I also encourage them to give everyone a chance to come for Lunch Bunch so I ask them to limit their visits to once per week. The students are also required to clean up their own messes: clean up spills, pick up something dropped on the floor, return trays to the cafeteria, and dispose of trash in a big trash can - not my little office waste basket.

If the students bring their ticket back to me when they return to my office, it goes into a drawing. Once a month, I have someone draw a ticket out and that student gets a small prize. The September winner was sixth grader Harmanie T. (pictured).

If parents/guardians know of a topic that we can discuss as a small group, feel free to email me and tell me about it. I appreciate the opportunity to get to know your children in this casual setting. We have so many wonderful students at Goza Middle School!
