Teen Safety Matters and Empower Me presentations by Caroline Bennington, the Prevention Education Specialist at the Donna and Percy Malone Child Safety Center, started Monday. Ms. Bennington attended school in Arkadelphia.
The purpose of the presentations is to make sure our students have the knowledge to make good choices when it comes to staying safe. Monday, Ms. Bennington spoke with Mr. Michael Ankton's Social Studies classes beginning with seventh graders and finishing with his eighth grade class in the afternoon. Students shared situations they had been in where they had to make good choices to stay safe, such as a stranger asking for their password when they were in an online gameroom, and being aware if someone around them is being bullied, the difference in being a bystander and an upstander, and being an empath - trying to identify with the feelings others are having when they appear sad or lonely. She encouraged students to always have a safe friend and a safe adult to share with when they need to talk about something.
She will be seeing every Goza student in their Social Studies classes in the next few weeks.
