Goza Middle School Generation Conservation Quiz Bowl Team

Last week, Mr. Ankton and Mrs. Dixon had the honor of taking our Goza Middle School Generation Conservation Quiz Bowl Team to the regional tournament at Henderson State University.

Our team went head-to-head in a very close match against Harmony Grove School. While we didn’t come away with the win this time, our students showed amazing knowledge, teamwork, and perseverance throughout the competition.

We are incredibly proud of the way they represented Goza and the effort they put into preparing for this tournament. This is just the beginning — we know they will continue to grow and be even stronger next year!

8th Grade Science

Ms. Whittle’s 8th grade science students completed a research project exploring the history of Arkansas’s mountains and rivers, examining their formation through the lens of geologic time and relative age dating of key geological features. Students presented in a science fair setting where they were able to present their findings or observe their classmates. Students were able to use this project to improve on self evaluations and peer evaluations by using a 1 through 4 scaled rubric. They were also able to provid feedback to their classmates using the “grow and glow” method emphasizing a success and an improvement.

ALL cells are microscopic, right? WRONG! Did you know the ostrich egg is the largest cell on Earth? Well ,it is. Now, there isn't an abundance of ostrich eggs in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, so Mrs. Smith's science classes scaled back to analyze chicken eggs instead as they continue their study on cells. Did you know just underneath that hard protective shell covering is a flexible skin? That thin layer is called a cell membrane. The structure of this organelle is quite curious. What does it do? What is it's purpose. That's what Mrs. Smith's students will be investigating.

SFE Roving Chef

8 students, four 7th grade and four 8th grade, were randomly chosen to be a part of SFE's Roving Chef food education program. On October 1st, these students will be joined by an SFE chef and Registered Dietitian to learn food safety, preparation, and the benefits of nutritious and balanced foods! Each month, eight new students will be chosen to participate. We are so excited to be able to implement this program, and we can't wait to see what our young chefs create!

September is Hunger Action Month to bring awareness to the more than 13 million families in America facing food insecurity.

Did you know that Goza Middle School has more than 50 students dealing with food insecurity? According to the Clark County Community Health Assessment in 2025, 23% of children in Clark County face food insecurity. When they are at school, students can eat a healthy breakfast and get lunch, but if they are short of food at home on non-school days, the only way we can help is by sending a small bag of non-perishable items home with them on Friday afternoon.

On the left is a picture of a typical food bag sent home. This bag costs about $3 per student per week. With more than 200 students in the Arkadelphia Public School District facing food insecurity, that adds up to more than $600 weekly!

Arkansas has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the nation. Patterson Federal Credit Union has been providing food bags through the Acorn Project for the last couple of years.

There are several ways to help support this important project. First, you can donate money to the program. Arkadelphia Public School District employees were challenged to donate $12 per month to help fund the program along with the employees of several other local businesses including the police department. You can also donate non-perishable items that will be packed into the bags. If you have a group interested in spending a few hours packing bags, let me know and I will pass on the information to Nicole McGough, Vice President of Business Development at Patterson, and Acorn Project coordinator.

Below is a link to join the Acorn Project by setting up a donation which can be recurring or a single time. Together, we can make sure our students have something to eat over the weekend keeping them healthy and strong to make the most of their time at school during the week.
