Hunter
Goza Middle School welcomes our new principal, Mrs. Tisha Hunter!
Badger

Goza Middle School teachers were elated to hear the news of the Arkadelphia Public Schools' School Board approval of Mrs. Tisha Hunter as our new principal.

Mrs. Hunter served as our Assistant Principal during the 2022-23 school year, and up to October 31 this year, where later she was assigned as Interim Principal.

Goza has endured a lot of change since last year - Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase School, Solution Tree Coaching, change in leadership, and the death of a colleague. A situation that some would not have handled with the grace Mrs. Hunter puts forth each and every day.

Mrs. Hunter, congratulations on your promotion. The Goza Greats are behind you 100%!

Kindness
This month, our goal is to affirm and celebrate the implementation of the CKH Process. February is also Kindness month, so we also aim to focus on our monthly trait of Kindness, by Sparking the Heart! #ProfessionalDevelopment #Education #iHeartCKH #capturingkidshearts

Sophia Clark's work recognized in Econ Art Contest

Sophia Clark, a Goza Middle School 8th-grade student, attended a WIN Session taught by Jequetta Berry entitled “Fun with Financial Topics.” She was encouraged to draw the picture that came to mind when she thought about the concept of Price. Her work was worthy of recognition in the Economics Arkansas Picture Econ Art Contest. She and her WIN teacher, Ms. Berry, both received a $50 Walmart gift card from Economics Arkansas, which sponsored the contest. Thank you to Ms. Berry for giving students the opportunity to create and share their work. Sophia, we are so proud of you!

6th Graders break down the word 'RESPECT'

CKH
RESPECT was CKH's theme for the month of January.

January's theme for Capturing Kids' Hearts is RESPECT. Our 6th-grade English Language Arts teachers and students collaborated in putting together this display on the windows at the end of their hallway. Each sticky note features student responses to these three questions: What does respect look like? What does respect sound like? How does it make you feel when you are treated with respect?

R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Honor You. Honor Me.

8th graders experience frigid waters of the Titanic's sinking

The 8th Grade Social Studies students have been learning about the sinking of the Titanic, which occurred in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Students in Mrs. Armstrong's class got an idea of what the passengers aboard the ill-fated Titanic experienced, when they volunteered to place their fingers into 28-degree water, the exact same temperature of the Atlantic Ocean the night the Titanic sank.

Her students also sampled macarons as they learned about Titanic's chief baker, Charles Joughin. He was famous for paddling around in frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean for roughly two hours after the ship sank until he discovered an overturned life raft. Most individuals who entered into the ocean that night died within fifteen to thirty minutes. While ordinarily alcohol would increase the chances of hypothermia, it is believed that the sheer amount of whisky Mr. Joughin consumed that night made his body calm enough to avoid panic. Furthermore, he even rescued several women by throwing them into lifeboats.

Lots of students turn out for Winter Formal

Thanks to all of you for making the Goza Middle School Winter Formal such a success. The students came out in red carpet style! One parent shared, "You could really see their personalities shine through their attire."

This was the second year for the Winter Formal, and we hope to continue to make it an annual event.

A special thank you to our PATHS Officers, Heather Crocker, Kortni Beene, and Joshua Chapman for taking charge in pulling this all together. Thanks to everyone who stayed to chaperone, serve refreshments, and assist with cleanup. Cletis Knox, our DJ extraordinaire, thank you for providing the music. 7th, 8th-grade Social Studies classes readying for traveling exhibits, field trips in February

8th Grade History

Mrs. Armstrong’s 8th-grade social studies classes will get a look at some World War I relics thanks to a traveling loan box that will be in her classroom.

There will also be a World War I traveling exhibit that will be displayed in the cafeteria on the stage from until February 23.

All grades

All grade levels at Goza will get to view the African American Legislators traveling exhibit again this year from February 26 until March 1. This exhibit is sponsored by the Black History Commission of Arkansas and the Arkansas History Commission.

This will be the last year that it will be displayed, as it is only allowed to be checked out two years so that other schools will have a chance to display the exhibit at their schools.

Field Trips

The Social Studies teachers are planning two separate field trips:

On February 21, 2024, the 8th-grade students will be going to Little Rock Central High School to learn about the historical significance of the school in the context of the Civil Rights Movement.

On February 28, 2024, the 7th- grade students will be going on a two-part field trip to the Arkansas Heritage Museum and the Old State House Museum in Little Rock.

At the Arkansas Heritage Museum, students will learn about the lives of pioneers in Arkansas, while at the Old State House Museum, students will learn about early Native American in Arkansas.

Exhibit
Last year's exhibit featured Arkansas African American Legislators from 1868-1893. This exhibit will be on display in the Goza cafeteria.
Exhibit
This exhibit is sponsored by the Black History Commission of Arkansas and the Arkansas History Commission.

Arkadelphia experienced some wild weather during January; schools closed several days

The Arkadelphia Public School District experienced some wild weather rides in mid-January. First, a prediction of at least 3-6 inches of snow was reported to fall in our area. We received a fairly heavy dusting of sleet Monday night, January 16. However, the roads were icy and slick, which prevented a danger to our bus drivers and students to get here, so school was cancelled for the day. Roads continued to stay icy, especially the county roads, so school remained closed.

Then, it seemed safe the following Thursday. Buses took off to pick up students; some were brought to their respective schools. When, all of a sudden, an unexpected icy mist came down and immediately froze on the streets! Buses began sliding, and a quick decision was made to close school again. Students who were already at school were picked up by parents, and buses made it safely back to the bus shop.

School was called off on Friday, then the following Monday because of freezing temperatures still lingering. Students returned on Tuesday.

All was well until heavy rains hit, causing flooding in some areas. Because of this, some of the rural routes were unable to run because the roads were closed and not safe for our buses or any vehicle. Arkadelphia's buses will not drive through high water.

Snow day
Arkadelphians woke up several mornings to see these posts on social media.
Weather
This post only applied to some students in the district affected by flooding and roads closed.
