Goza has enthusiastic start to the school year

Welcome back Students, Families, and Staff,

I am thrilled to share that we have had a great start to the new school year! It has been a joy to see our students, staff, and families come together with such energy and enthusiasm.

One of our first initiatives this year was the creation of social contracts in each classroom. This year, we are placing a strong emphasis on building relationships, fostering a positive school culture, and ensuring that every student feels supported and valued.

We have dedicated a significant amount of time teaching and reinforcing the three school-wide expectations: Be Respectful; Be Responsible and Be Safe.

Our school improvement goals are to Increase all students' growth proficiency in reading and math by 3% over the next three years on the Arkansas Teaching and Learning Assessment System and continue implementing Capturing Kids' Hearts to foster a positive school culture and climate. These expectations will help ensure safety and learning as our priorities.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we embark on a successful school year.

Remember our mission: We will Engage, Educate, and Empower all students to excel.

Kindly,

Tisha Hunter

BookNook Is Coming to Goza!

BookNook is an ESSA Level 1 provider of high-impact virtual tutoring solutions designed to accelerate K-8 student achievement in reading and math. This is made possible by the approval of Goza Middle School's application for the High Impact Tutoring Grant provided by the state of Arkansas.

This online tutoring program was first used by Peake Elementary School last year. According to our instructional facilitator, Ms. Della Miller, fifteen of the thirty students who participated in the district's piloting of this program are now on grade level for reading comprehension based on uPAR assessment results. We are optimistic we will see improvement in these students as we partner with the district in supporting its goal to improve our schools' literacy and math proficiency.

Students selected for this program will receive virtual instruction from highly qualified teachers. Reading tutoring will begin on September 17th, and Math tutoring will begin on September 24.

PFCU launches The Acorn Project

Patterson Credit Union announced that it has started a charitable foundation,

The Acorn Project. The Acorn Project will provide food and other necessities to

children throughout Clark County and surrounding communities.

Patterson has a long history of working closely with school districts to support faculty,

staff, and students. “The very first sponsorship we ever did was for a community

event to provide school supplies for students in need. Supporting the school districts

and all they do for our local children is a top priority for Patterson,” said Shawn

Cowart, Patterson’s President/CEO. “The Acorn Project will provide funding to feed

children in need over weekends and breaks from school. The backpack program, as it

is often called, has been our main philanthropy for nearly a decade. The Acorn Project

will provide a sustainable way to maintain that project. In addition to the backpack

program, we will seek new opportunities to support our local children.”

The Acorn Project will allow community partners to help provide our local children

with the food and necessities they need to thrive. To get involved, businesses and

individuals can choose to make tax deductible donations to the foundation. All money

donated to the foundation will be issued as grants to purchase food for the students in

need. Patterson will also set up packing events to organize the food. Businesses and

community groups are welcome to participate in the Acorn Project by helping with

those events. If you are interested in donating, hosting a packing night, or learning

more, please contact Nicole McGough at Patterson Credit Union.

Dear Community Partner,

Patterson Federal Credit Union strongly believes in the credit union philosophy of “People helping people” and we enjoy supporting many things in our great community. For the past eight years, our main philanthropic focus has been to ensure that local children have the food they need over weekends and breaks from school. This project, sometimes referred to as the Backpack Program or Project CARE, has been a top priority of ours and we have worked with many other community members to make sure our local students are not going hungry. Things have changed over the past several years and we, along with our partners in the school district, have had to make many adjustments to sustain this project.

In order to create a more streamlined process, as well as allow more community partnerships, Patterson Federal Credit Union started The Acorn Project, a foundation dedicated to helping support the needs of children in our community. The Acorn Project was started with an initial donation of $10,000 by Patterson and will be used to provide food for children in need throughout local communities. In order to sustain this project and increase community involvement, we are seeking donations. Any donation you make to The Acorn Project is tax deductible.

During the 2023-2024 school year, 100-150 bags of food were sent home with Arkadelphia Public School District students each weekend. For the most part, each bag of food contained a packet of oatmeal, a granola bar, a package of crackers, a cup of fruit, macaroni and cheese or ramen noodles, Vienna sausages, and soup/ravioli. For some children that would supplement what they had at home and for others that may be all they ate in a weekend. On average each food bag cost $3.50. Over a 36-week school year, the cost of this program is over $18,000.

We would like to invite you to make a donation to this fund and sponsor a week’s worth of food bags. With a donation of $350.00, you will be providing one weekend worth of food to these children. Additionally, you will be recognized as the food sponsor of the week on social media (both for The Acorn Project and Arkadelphia School District) as well as highlighted in branch at Patterson.

If you have any questions about how this project will run, the need for these backpacks of food in our local schools, or anything else related to The Acorn Project, please feel free to reach out and we would be happy to meet with you.

Thank you for your support,

Shawn Cowart, President and CEO; Nicole McGough, Vice President

The acorn is a symbol of growth, fresh starts, and unlimited potential.

From the acorn, a small seed, a mighty oak tree can grow.

and creates a mighty impact on our community.

Kinsey
Congratulations to Kinsey Minchew! A 7th grader at Goza, she correctly guessed the number of "Bookworms" that were in the water bottle. During Open House, Media Specialist Mrs. Kathy King had a "Guess how many Bookworms are in the water bottle" contest. A water bottle, filled with gummy worms, challenged visitors to guess the number inside. Whoever came the closest won the bottle full of gummy worms and a lunch kit. Kinsey's guess was 56, and there were exactly 56 in there!
